The past hour of discussion has gotten us nowhere. The members of the Shadow Council have explained everything to me. Willow’s spy network. How they fear the safehouses on earth will fall soon. The power that Bain has discovered in the woods. The intel that Kellan is seeking out Carys. The continued investigation into Ruairi’s people. It’s all so much, and I don’t know where to begin.

And it seems like each of us has a different idea of what needs to be done.

I’ve zoned out of the conversation. Bain wants to open the portals to his realm, to go see what kinds of forces he can rally there. Ruairi vehemently disagrees, stating that we don’t need another uncertain variable in this equation. Remy thinks we should visit the other Councils back on Earth to see what kinds of fighters they have available, and Sai thinks we should lead Ruairi’s people in a straight-up exodus, encouraging them to come back to Earth with us.

“That’s not a solution,” Ruairi says, pulling my attention back to what they are saying. “They’ve had the option to go before. Before the realms closed.”

“Yes, but things were different then,” Remy interjects.

Ruairi crosses his arms in front of his chest. “Not as different as you might think.”

“This is going nowhere,” Sai says, his frustration evident.

“What do you do on the Shadow Council when you disagree about what actions to take?” I ask.

The guys stop bickering and look at me.

“Well,” Remy says. “Honestly, we don’t disagree all that often. We usually see the way forward pretty clearly.”

“And when we do disagree, we usually just let Bain win so he doesn’t set everything on fire with his mind,” Sai says snarkily. “He’s a sore loser.”

Bain grunts. “I’ll show you what sore is, bloodsucker.”

“We vote,” Ruairi says. “And we abide by our decisions, since we are a team. That is why we work, and it is what sets us apart from other Councils.”

“What do you mean?” I ask. “Are the other Councils problematic?”

“They can be,” Remy says. “The members of the Councils tend to side with their particular factions instead of what is best for the supernatural community as a whole. It’s why they have a fairly high turnover rate. Members come and go, not wanting to stay in such a precarious position for long.”

“Because they can’t trust each other completely.”

“Right. So, we decided long ago that we won’t conduct our business that way. It defeats the purpose of the Councils. We have a system, and it works.”

“Until you showed up,” Sai interjects, smiling at me. He’s joking, but I can’t help but think that there is a hint of truth to it.

“Sai,” Remy says in a chastising tone.

“What?” Sai says innocently. “We all know that she turned our world upside down.” He stands up and places his hands on my shoulders, leaning down to kiss me on the cheek. “But in a good way.”

“Well, I think one thing is clear to me.” I swallow, not wanting to say what comes next.
